Report: NFL close to pushing draft back to May

The NFL and NFLPA are close to making an offseason move they believe will put the NFL in a bigger spotlight during a time of year when they’re not making news on the field.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, an announcement could come soon that would push the draft back to May and move up the start of the league year to before the NFL Scouting Combine.

That means the league year would be pushed up approximately three weeks or more as the combine typically happens in late February. The league year began in mid-March this year. If the change happens, the calendar would be set that way for the next three years.

Why change?

Television ratings for the draft could drive the movement. By starting the league year earlier, free agents would be placed with teams (and paid) sooner. Of course, the combine could also be pushed back into March as part of this plan. Stay tuned.
