Report: Oakland could be logical destination for McCloughan

Through the few comments Scot McCloughan has made since his exit from the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday, it’s clear he hopes to be back working in the league some time soon.

Some reports have linked his tie to Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson and pointed out that he could fill the vacancy created when John Schneider left for Seattle. Well, Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times has a different destination in mind for McCloughan – across the bay from San Francisco.

McDonald outlines the close ties that McCloughan has to the Raiders, as well as the obvious – the organization is in desperate need of a personnel man at the top to help steer what has been a rudderless ship.

His father Kent McCloughan is a scout for the Raiders and was a standout cornerback during his playing days. His brother Dave used to work for the team too. McCloughan knows Al Davis well and McDonald points out that they spent plenty of time talking together during the joint practices the teams hold during training camp.

It’s an interesting idea. Given the fact that the 49ers have yet to address the departure of McCloughan, it’s apparent the team is probably still working on just how the separation will be made. McCloughan’s agent Peter Schaffer was adamant last week that his client was not quitting. Whether or not McCloughan will be paid by the Niners for a while to not work remains to be seen.

What is clear is they could always use some help in Oakland.
