Man who said something to McCarthy is fired Brad Biggs
When things go wrong for a team, everything comes out, and that is what has happened in Green Bay.
The Packers have fired a part time member of the stadium’s maintenance staff for apparently saying something he shouldn’t have to Mike McCarthy before the team’s game with Minnesota on Nov. 1., but the coach won’t say what was said and has denied that he had anything to do with Mike Wood being terminated.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported the story this morning, and McCarthy addressed the issue in his press conference. Wood, 53, had been working for the Packers for 22 years. He says he was sitting in a cart in a stadium tunnel three days before the game when McCarthy came along speaking with members of the grounds crew. According to Wood, all he said was, “Hey coach, let's get the boys ready to kick some butt this weekend.”
When Wood arrived at the stadium prior to the game on Sunday, he was escorted away and was told he was done working for the team. He was told that McCarthy heard him say something along the lines of “don't lay an egg.’’
“I was hoping you guys weren't going to go this far with this,’’ McCarthy said in his press conference. “I'm going to be honest with you, I don't really know the man. He made a comment to me, I made a comment to him, it's not the worst thing that's been said, but I would not say it to a fellow employee. So that's as far as I want to go with it.”
McCarthy said he stopped to inquire with another worker the name of the man—Wood—and then left. Pressed for what exactly Wood said that led to him being released, McCarthy declined.
“Like I said, it's not the worst thing that's been said but I wouldn't say it to a fellow employee,’’ he said.
It’s precisely not what McCarthy wants to be addressing when he is preparing to face Dallas Sunday with the Packers scuffling, but when you lose this is what happens.

This sounds like a couple grade school kids. Don't call the coach a poopy pants or he'll cry and tell the teacher!
Oh, brother! He should either address it or not. This was obviously a stupid non-story, but now it's getting some legs because he keeps coming back and adding more too it. This morning it was "I had nothing to do with it" and now it's "yeah, words were exchanged but I won't say what".
And this is my favorite quote: "I was hoping you guys weren't going to go this far with this." wth?? Why would a head coach say that to the media? Say either "no comment" if you don't want to talk about it, or "here's what happened" if you're willing to. Either way, that'd be it. I mean, as a head coach, you gotta' know that the media's going to waste your time with irrelevancies for as long as you let them. They'll do that because their job is to make themselves relevant. It's what they do. And, by participating, he's just adding oxygen to a fire. Leave it alone and it'll die!
Again, this is obviously an unimportant story, except that it's just another example of Mickey Mouse crap from the powers that be in the Packers. They just came out flat in a must-win game, then they somehow figured out a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against the winless Bucs. Not that there's ever a good time to try the merits of firing a grounds crew member in the media, but this is certainly not it. If I were a veteran player on the team right now, and my window for winning in the NFL were closing, I would be frustrated beyond words when I saw this story dragging on. They just had this big team meeting about focus and accountability, and now this... unbelievable.
Seems like coach McCarthy need to get with whomever fired Mr. Wood and get him back on staff. Otherwise he will forever be asked what was said. I think a wrongful termination suit is in order. Coach McCArthy screwed up...................Used to be a packer fan but no longer. Seems like that organizqation is getting dumber and dumber.
Believe me. This guy will get his job back, unless he refuses it. He's got attorneys lining up to represent him... have no doubt.
Uh, how do you guys even know Wood had a contract? If it was at-will employment they don't have to give a reason, they can just as well say "We're firing you for no reason." I don't think firing him is the right thing to do but I kinda doubt those who're falling all over themselves to talk about lawsuits really know what's going on.
Been on the field longer than McCarthy or Thompson... no wonder they needed to have him fired.
They can't stand that type of relationship.
Again...one of the three stooges of the Green Bay Packers has spoken.
Can't coach, can't win games & can't tell which players should be on the team to give them the best chance to win games. I don't think they are n the right mindset to play football.
If everyone in Packer land that has said something negative about Mike McCarthy were fired, the unemployment rate in the area would be 95%.
I'm calling my shot: Mr. Wood will end up being an employee of the Minnesota Vikings.
"If you dont love it leave it" Theres a ton of people who would serve the Packers
and take pride in being there and working hard and being positive.Alot of people dont have work right now.America used to run fine just like that.
Coach McCarthy has, as attorneys say, impeached himself. Further, he's demonstrated what a small man he is. "I had nothing to do with it", then admits he got the man's name, and somehow, maybe devine intervention, the guy gets fired. OK, mike. He may not have done the actual firing, but he handed the gun to the shooter and helped him aim. Henseforth (as we attorneys say) I shall not capitalize his name, as it would give undue stature to a small, petty man who has no business coaching MY team.
How sad is this? When I heard this, It felt like being asked for a moment of silence. Only not out of remembrance, but pure shock!! McCarthy will no longer be looked at or listened to the same again. This will go around being asked, "Did you hear what the "Packers" coach did?" Making the" team" look bad. McCarthy should hang his head in shame, no matter what he may achieve being a coach , this firing episode will be what he is remembered for!
If McCarthy doesn't go 6-2 in the final 8 games, he'll be following this grounds crew guy out of town.
The team has talent and this was his year to show us he could coach. So far he has failed to put a real team on the table.

Sounds like a wrongful termination suit to me but I'm no attorney. I suggest Mr. Wood get an attorney and teach Coach McCarthy a lesson in humility, as if his team hasn't already done so! Oh, it's alright, I can say that, I don't work for the Packers.
