Report: Panthers sign DT Ed Johnson

The Carolina Panthers have added some depth for their depleted defensive line by signing tackle Ed Johnson to a contract, according to John Clayton of ESPN.

It’s a move that makes sense. Former Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks is in Carolina, and Johnson has to be motivated to get his contract back on track. He started 16 games for Indianapolis in 2007 as an undrafted free agent, but off-field problems derailed his career there.

Johnson was cut after one game in 2008 following a marijuana arrest. He rejoined the Colts this past season but was bounced again after only four games. Johnson had problems in college at Penn State, too, where he was suspended on three occasions.

The Panthers are hopeful that nose tackle Maake Kemeatu makes a full return from a torn Achilles tendon, but injuries tore through the interior of the line last season. Adding Johnson now makes sense. The Panthers had brought him in for a look two weeks ago.
