Report: Redskins expect to re-sign Fred Davis

Bogus Martellus Bennett tweets certainly caused a stir this morning.

But it is still possible the New York Giants could re-sign the tight end, and the Washington Redskins might keep their tight end too.

John Keim of the Washington Examiner reports that the “Redskins have told others they expect to re-sign (Fred) Davis.” The club placed the franchise tag on Davis a year ago but elected not to use that designation on him for 2013.

If the Redskins do not strike a deal, Davis will be an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday. There might not be a robust market for Davis because of a series of issues Keim outlines, foremost the torn Achilles tendon Davis suffered in October. They are not easy injuries to bounce back from.

Davis also has a past that includes a drug suspension and a bizarre case in which Davis served as his own attorney in court. So, there would be issues for a new team to wade through when considering paying Davis. It might just be a situation where his value is highest in Washington, even if it’s not quite what the player was hoping it would be.
