Report: Sean Payton will appeal suspension

Sean Payton will appeal his season-long suspension for his role in the bounty program with the New Orleans Saints.

According to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network, Payton will appeal the suspension, which is slated to begin Sunday, today. Per the report, Gregg Williams, who was given an indefinite suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, will not appeal.

Goodell has said Payton can continue to work while his appeal is under way. But he said the process will be expedited, meaning Payton could have additional days not weeks.

According to La Canfora, Payton will “seek guidance on the amount of time he will have to prepare his appeal” and will also ask the NFL what evidence it has against him in this matter.

The Saints have been meeting with retired coach Bill Parcells over the past week in an effort to potentially prepare him to take over on an interim basis. Because Payton will be appealing to the man who suspended him, Goodell, his chances of a victory here would appear slim.
