From ESPN.com:
Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair has been killed, a source has confirmed to ESPN.com.
McNair, 36, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville, police spokesperson Don Aaron said. A female victim was also found dead. Aaron said the woman has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident happened near 2nd South & Lea Ave in Nashville.
McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 were with the Titans. He played his final two years with the Baltimore Ravens, retiring after the 2007 season.
"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner K.S. "Bud" Adams Jr. said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."
Wow, what a shock. McNair was truly a gridiron warrior. He will always be remembered for his sacrifice on Sunday. I remember him picking himself off the field time and time again and playing like he was unscathed. A true Pro
Immediately needs to be said/asked: "Where are the details?!?" This happened pretty early in the day (PST here but still), yet they've released as much information as someone who had only @ that moment (of the interview/questions) arrived at the scene...I can't imagine a person alive that doesn't have their "WARNING:SKETCHY" instinct going off when interpreting any/all coverage of this tragedy...
The pang of "....wow, really?" I felt when someone told me about McNair's passing was an unusal one, distinct from many I can remember. Just an unfortunately aprupt ending for someone I watched on Pros vs. Joes very recently, and the way I perceive(d) him since he came out of Alcorn State was as a clean-cut, responsible, and smart human being...I say this with little recollection of any overtly negative news about him, and he's been in the league for a long time (to this 24 yo). and with little intention of digging for any past transgressions-I'm sure everyone and their pep-pep are already nose deep in it, eager to impress....I prefer to (try and) overlook a person I respects' personal/intimate "issues" in their wake. EVERY ONE OF US has demons that, if lord Zeus struck us down tommorrow with a mighty thunderbolt, are horrifying to imagine being Front-page news to the entire world (both any sports fans and the non-fans alike), sitting Top and Center on home-pages from MSN.com to Yahoo.com to AOL.com. Imagine the 5-10 worst-possible things in your life to become tabloid fonder, then imagine your life if you were a successful/untold-#-millionaire...anyways, the man is no longer among us. That felt like a bit of a ramble after a bit, but my point is-he's dead, what purpose does the likely/eventual slander have after his death? What outcomes are possible to occur? The family he leaves behind, aka the only people who will still(forever) be affected(interested/thinking ab) the fact that Steve McNair will never take another breath, stand only to compound their grief with processing all that is unearthed. Some writers/bloggers get a bit of recognition, probably to be forgotten long before the McNair family will forget the tarnished legacy of Steve.
Why did I bother with the previous paragraph? "Ai'nt no one talked like that yet!" Well, a) I'm sick of being bombarded with slanderous post-humous "dirt" re: the latest "celeb" expiration...we're reminded of so-n-so's death to the point we actually couldn't forget, then the slander is shoved down our throat til we can no longer respect 'em. I swear to God the force-feeding of celeb coverage is completely warping our collective reality/conciousness as human beings (@ least/esp. in US). Here's an obscure observation (OT, sorry :/ ...Women's rights took a while to assimilate in the USA, but it did open doors for many others world-wide. The desire to feel equal is surely as strong today as it was then. And surely, the amount of female college graduates in our workforce is enormous. Well, being a 24 year old male, and knowing like-aged females in every corner of the country, I do confidently claim that 9 out of 10 spend as much free time overloading their brain with this worthless crap as we do about football/sports. Now it's the dominating focus on programs such as SportsCenter (what has become of the world!),trying to take control of all members of society. That's not what I wanted to point out tho, really, my question is, how many other countries consumate female culture is as absorbed with E! type drivel as ours is? I fear for the generation after mine, because they are sucked in before they are able/old enough to develop a work ethic/challenge themselves. In India, do you think the mass pre-teen female population spends all their free time with this crap? In China? In Japan, etc? Not even comparable. Why are they pulling away from us in the to-be generation %s? Maybe because they deter such drivel, rather than overwhelm them with it.
I am only gonna post this because of the length of it (too long not to!), but I highly doubt anyone has bothered reading this far (dont stop if you have!) It's ironic for that to have come from me, because I just realized that if you take woman and replace it with me, then take
"celeb reverence" and replace it with "Football/Baseball/Basketball/etc.", you have, well, me! I'll certainly admit it. However, this WAS to be a severe critique of the responding Police Unit/Department on the case. The amount of information they have given is so miniscule, so contrite, that you are essentially FORCED to conjure up a possible scenario. First off, 2 dead people, shot up in a dwelling unoccupied by either; the non-famous victim is a complete unknown, but clearly not McNair's wife/kin (is he married? I assume so....one of my first thoughts was "well, clearly it's not his wife"); ok....and? No suspect, no known motive, no information collected at the scene given...just so SHADY. Are they trying to cover something up? Did someone contaminate the evidence/scene while investigating? THEY HAVE TO KNOW MORE THEN THEY HAVE TOLD US. What do you think the first handful of suspicions commonly arise in people? Drug deal gone bad? Foiled Robbery? Infidelity discovered? ALL bad/negative ones, that's for sure. The cops have basically called out OPEN SEASON on McNair dirt, and I want to know why. The family should consider suing them for today's shamockery if this gets too ugly..there is NO OTHER WAY TO INTERPRET this event, not with the information available to us. And smells fishier than fishy, in one way or another. Man what a rant...understood if removed, but hopefully I made sense somewhere in that mess (less likely every word that passes lol)

I just... I... just... there just aren't words to describe the eerie quiet that has blanketed Nashville at this time.
