Steve Spagnuolo has been regarded as one of the top defensive coordinator candidates available since being dumped by the St. Louis Rams.
He’s been mentioned as a potential candidate to be a head coach in Indianapolis after Jim Caldwell was fired earlier today, but one possibility sticks out like a good match right now.
Spagnuolo will meet with Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday with a possibility of taking over there for Gregg Williams, who exited to team up with Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news. It makes sense. The Saints have a top-flight offense which means the defense there doesn’t have to be the league’s best for the team to compete. The Saints just need to be able to stop the San Francisco 49ers in the final minute.
On the surface, at least, the Saints would offer Spagnuolo a chance to become a hot head-coaching candidate again quickly. We’ll see what shaks out but it looks like a good fit from here.
