Giants defensive end owns most bizarre remark of Super Bowl week to this point Brad Biggs
Super Bowl week is usually reserved for some ridiculous statements.
Typically, someone from one of the teams, or players from both teams will say utter something they shouldn’t and it creates a mini-stir for a day or two.
But the most nonsensical remarks this week right now belong to a player that will need a ticket to get into Super Bowl XLIV Sunday night. Leave it to Osi Umenyiora of the New York Giants to insert a cleat into his mouth.
Visiting with WFAN earlier today, Umenyiora said if he’s not a starter for the Giants next season he’s going to quit. Yes, quit.
"I'm not going to be a back up player, I can promise you that," Umenyiora said. "I'll stop playing football before I do that ever again. This has been just the worst offseason of my entire life. I can't even think of a time when things were this bad during the offseason. You're supposed to be relaxing, but I can't relax because all I can think of is the things that took place last season, you understand? So for me it's not something that I'm going to do. If I'm asked to come back there and do that then I'll just stop playing football."
Umenyiora might be happy that the Giants have hired Perry Fewell as their new defensive coordinator. He butted heads with the ousted Bill Sheridan last season, and his play on the field was not up to par. In fact, Umenyiora considered that he might be done in the Big Apple during parts of last season.
"Did it go through my mind? Obviously, yes," he said. "Obviously you come through a situation where you've been here for a long time and you've won Super Bowls, you've been to the Pro Bowl a couple of times, then things like that start happening, you start being benched and they say you're coming in on the third down rush, I think it almost seemed like the writing was on the wall at that particular time. I felt like I had worn out my welcome, because for certain people, no matter what happens, they'll never take them out of the lineup, you understand what I mean?
"So I felt that way. I felt like maybe it was my last year because of that situation. But you never know man. I hope it's not. I hope things can be rectified and things can be resolved. But we'll see."
This sounds like a player who needs a serious talking to at some point before the Giants get back to business. You know, in order to see if his head is screwed on right. Fewell certainly isn’t going to listen to demands from any players. Keep an eye on this one.

I remember Jacobs declaring he would retire if he didn't crack 4.0 yards per carry this season...What happened to that?
wow is right. umenyiora seems to have gone soft and gutless. childish comments... have the riches gone to his edge and has he lost his willingness to fight for his spot? i was happy to see him on the bench last year. some players have a sense of entitlement and think they can keep their starting spot no matter how poor they practice and play
I love Osi, one of my favorite Giants. BUT, he is in no position to be talking about starting after the season he had in '09.
Osi, you want to start? Then start playing like a starter and not someone who is non-exiestent against the run!
As I said before I'm a Giant fan. It's been mentioned during and after the season the Giants are lacking any kind of leader. I'm not talking on the field kind but the locker room kind that Strahan provided. The kind that could pull disgruntled players on the side and talk things out with. Talk like this will just eat at that player until action is taken hopefully by Perry Fewell our new DC. It will not only eat at the player but spread to others like it did when we had Shockey and Barber pissing and moaning.
You notice Osi didn't say he should be traded but treatened to outright retire which tells me he can be talked to and things hashed out. I'm not there so i don't know exactly whats happening but I don't feel the team needs a complete overhaul. We have the talent it's just a matter of it being used to the benifit of the players talent and not trying to fit their talent into a system that won't work. We also need some depth on the line, runningback and our defensive secondary is (and has been for years )weak.
This is why you draft Suh...to suck up attention in the middle and hopefully free up the ends.

Wow...that's one of the most childish displays i've seen from a player.
And i have followed Terrel Owens/Jay Cutler's careers in recent years.
To be a starter he has to play like one. And he hasn't done that.
