Report: Westbrook to see specialist this week
Eagles running back must evaluate future Brad Biggs
Brian Westbrook will consult a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh this week to help determine his future, ESPN has reported.
Westbrook suffered his second concussion in four games on Sunday at San Diego, and is out indefinitely. The first concussion he had was on Oct. 26 at Washington when he was temporarily knocked out after his head hit the knee of London Fletcher as he went to the ground.
The veteran running back sat out the next two games—although Eagles coach Andy Reid nearly played him the week before against Dallas—and then returned against the Chargers, cleared by Philadelphia’s doctors.
Past players Troy Aikman and Bill Romanowski have visited the same clinic, and concussions ended their career. Former Pittsburgh and Chicago running back Merril Hoge retired after only two concussions in 1994. He says that the Bears cleared him to return five days after suffering his first concussion, and after his second concussion he couldn’t recognize family members.
“What happened to me would not happen in the National Football League today,” Hoge testified last month on Capitol Hill. “That does not mean that we are already there. We are not all the way.”
Hoge said all players should be evaluated by a neurological doctor and held out for at least seven days after concussion symptoms subside.
It would appear Westbrook sat out that length of time and he was still re-injured.

Add a CommentI agree with Matt N. except perhaps I'd like to see Mr. Westbrook put this all behind him so that he may enjoy the rest of his days watching the Eagles win with his kids.

I'm an Eagles fan since 1971, long time season ticket holder. Love Brian Westbrook, but don't end up like another favorite of mine, Andre Waters, dead at age 44 after too many concussions. Do the right thing, get the evaluations, take the rest of the year off if you have to. If you can't comeback - thanks for all the great memories, the return against the Giants especially!
