Robinson heading to the open market?

One of the Houston Texans’ highest-paid players may be cashing his game checks in a new city next season.

Cornerback Dunta Robinson-who was franchised by the team for a comfortable $9.957 million in 2009-is one of the Texans’ eight unrestricted free agents heading into the offseason.

And it’s beginning to look like the team is willing to let him go.

According to a tweet from John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Robinson said he’s heard nothing from the team recently, which McClain believes is an indication that the Texans’ do not intend to place the franchise tag on him by the February 25 deadline.

If McClain’s belief is right, Robinson will be eligible to sign with any team he likes.

The 27-year-old Robinson was drafted by the Texans in 2004.  He’s recorded 13 interceptions in his six professional seasons, but was held without a pick in 16 starts this past year.

There are currently 20 veteran cornerbacks set to become unrestricted free agents this March, with Robinson being one of the most talented in the group.  Should he hit the market, here are a few teams who may be interested in acquiring his services:

1. Minnesota Vikings:  Cedric Griffin is coming back from a torn ACL and Antoine Winfield will be 33-years old in June and has been battling a foot injury.

2. Atlanta Falcons:  Ranked 28^th against the pass in 2009 and could use an upgrade at the position that brings some experience to the table.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers:  William Gay is a restricted free agent and Ike Taylor turns 30-years-old in May.

4. Baltimore Ravens:  Have been rumored to be in the market for a veteran cornerback.  Both Frank Walker and Corey Ivy are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.
