Ron Rivera confirms Panthers looking for receiver help

Steve Smith has been re-energized playing with Cam Newton and given a chance to flourish last season, tight end Greg Olsen finally took off.

But the Carolina Panthers need another weapon for their passing game and that is no secret to anyone.

Coach Ron Rivera confirmed as much during an appearance on NFL Network from the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The Panthers have defensive needs that could be addressed in the draft and it is expected a handful of playmaking wide receivers will reach the open market in free agency with Dwayne Bowe, Greg Jennings and Mike Wallace possibilities.

Rivera, during his appearance, was asked point blank if Wallace will be the Panthers’ target even though Carolina faces some salary-cap issues.

You're warm, but you know, what's going to be interesting is how things unfold once we get to March 12,” Rivera said. “There's a lot of things that are out there that we have to really take into consideration. You know, we'll see how things are going to affect us when we get to the 12th.”

One way or another, the Panthers need to find some help. Smith is 33. The draft lacks a sure top-10 pick at the position but is considered deep at wide receiver. Maybe the Panthers go that route in seeking help for Newton.
