Roy Helu planning to be back in mix for Redskins

Mike Shanahan did what he’s done before last season when he found an obscure running back that could be a big-time performer in Alfred Morris.

Then, the Redskins added to the stable last month by drafting Chris Thompson from Florida State and Jawan Jamison from Rutgers, providing some more depth to a unit that should be getting some help. Zac Boyer of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star reports Roy Helu, who led the team in rushing as a rookie in 2011, should be back from foot surgery before the start of training camp.

Helu played in only the first two games last season as he dealt with leg injuries. With Morris rolling, the ground game was in good shape. Now, Helu aims to make a contribution. The problem is it took quite a while to diagnose his issues and late foot surgery has forced him to miss time.

It slowed the process because now I have to recover from surgery late,” Helu said, per Boyer. “I couldn’t get any better.

<p> “I can’t control (the team drafting two running backs), and I can’t blame them. I got into the procedure late, so you’ve got to plan (for the future). I don’t blame our organization at all.”

We’ll see how the backfield shakes out this summer.
