Arkansas quarterback under the gun Aaron Wilson
INDIANAPOLIS -- Under intense scrutiny due to strong drug rumors surrounding him, Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett refused to discuss the unconfirmed allegations today at the NFL scouting combine.
"It doesn't bother me," Mallett said. "I would say I'm a great person. I would tell them ask the coaches I've worked with before if you want to know about my character."
How do the rumors get started?
"I can't tell you," Mallett said. "When I saw that stuff, I laughed about it. You can't control it."
When asked if he had an issue with drugs, he denied having a problem.
"No, not at all," Mallett said.
Mallett was arrested two years ago for public intoxication, but hasn't had any other off-field incidents that have ever been disclosed.
There haven't been any reports that the Texas City native has ever failed a drug test.
"I can only control what I can control," Mallett said. "I don't worry about things I can't control. If people talk about them, obviously it's going to keep circulating or whatever. I can't control that. That's why I don't even want to talk about them because there's nothing I can control about that."
What about the timing of the rumors right before the combine?
"Obviously, somebody did it for a reason right before the combine and that draft," Mallett said. "That's the last time I'm going to talk about that, though. I'm not going to talk about it right now. I'm going to talk about it with the teams and we've discussed it and everything is good."
Mallett was told by one reporter that the rumors won't die until he addresses the allegations.
"I understand that," Mallett said. "I'm not going to talk about it. I'll talk about it with the teams."
