Brees wins the MVP as the Big Easy starts Mardi Gras early. Joe Fortenbaugh
MIAMI, Fla-In the end, the old football maxim held true.
Defense wins championships.
Despite 48 total points in a game that featured two of the NFL’s top-seven scoring offenses during the 2009 regular season, Super Bowl XLIV will be remembered for a big play made on the defensive side of the football.
Leading 24-17 with 3:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, Saints cornerback Tracy Porter stepped in front of a Peyton Manning pass and took it 74 yards to the house to seal the deal for New Orleans in a thrilling 31-17 Super Bowl win.
“It was great film study,” Porter told reporters after the game. “We knew that on third-and-short they stack, and they like the outside release for the slant. It was great film study by me, a great jump and a great play.”
The victory gives the city of New Orleans its first Vince Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.
The Saints, who were trailing 10-0 after the first quarter, never lost their composure. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ unit stepped up huge, holding the Colts to just seven points over the final 45 minutes of action.
But it wasn’t just the defense that rose up to deliver the Big Easy its first world championship. The always-overlooked special teams made a big play for a Saints team that entered Sunday evening’s showdown as 5.5 point underdogs.
Saints head coach Sean Payton shocked the capacity crowd at Sun Life Stadium in Miami by opening the second half with an onside kick-which New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Casillas recovered- sending a nation of Who Dats in attendance into a wild frenzy.
Six plays later, quarterback Drew Brees-who was named the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV-connected with running back Pierre Thomas for a 16-yard touchdown that put the Saints up 13-10 with just over three minutes gone in the third quarter.
On the night, Brees completed 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 114.5.
In addition to Brees, the rest of the Saints played a relatively mistake-free game as well. New Orleans committed just three penalties for 19 yards and had zero turnovers.
On the losing side, quarterback Peyton Manning completed 31 of 45 passes for 333 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Rest assured, the party is well underway in South Beach.

Peyton Manning CHOKED.
Just like Brett Favre in his second Super Bowl.
Just like Rev. Tebow did at the Senior Bowl.
Just like Senator Tebow will at the Combine.
Just like FOX News Analyst Tebow will on Sunday afternoons.
NFL Boss Roger With the FOX News Propaganda Wife and Georgie Bodenheimer were seen weeping in their luxury box in Miami - their Public Relations Prodigy A FAILURE.
Tony Dungy did as good a job analyzing this game as his did serving as a father to his son of a few years back.
I LOVE SEEING MONEY LOSE.
Peyton Manning doesn't give a damn about this game. Manning's got a $100 million contract with a $40 million signing bonus ready for his offshore bank account. That's why he plays the game. That's why he chokes.
Just like Tiger and his Prostitutes.
MONEY
Three years ago Grossman threw a pick six. Now Manning. The pick six will always kill you. It always decides playoff games.
Guess we'll have to hold off that coronation of Manning as best ever, huh?
Don't know if the game was boring, but the ads were easily the worst. The best? The Favre commercial.
Vikings must be kicking themselves. Bears took homefield away from them. Otherwise who knows?
Peyton Manning's CHOKE only reminds us why Johnny Unitas is the greatest quarterback in the history of the game.
Unitas DELIVERED in the clutch.
Unitas was a WINNER.
Unitas invented the two-minute drill.
Peyton Manning's just an overpaid chump in a designer suit who CHOKES when the money is on the table.
Mark, I hope you get banned for that sickening remark about Tony Dungy and his son!
Disgusting.
MARK YOUR MEDICATIONS ARE READY !
MARK YOUR MEDICATIONS ARE READY !
Worst part of all of this is the thuggery going on now on Bourbon Street, in New Orleans, and throughout Louisiana.
If those left-wing, anti-American terrorists down there had enacted Ronald Reagan’s economic principles, cut taxes on business, and reduced regulation, New Orleans and its people would have been well prepared for Katrina and President Bush.
Instead, those communist fascist socialist marxists laid around doing nothing, took our tax money on the trillion dollar welfare roll in New Orleans alone, and let Katrina hit their state.
If they had only gotten off their butts and gotten to work, they’d have been OK. Now they try to blame it all on President Bush, the greatest leader our nation has ever seen.
Dan,
Just typing the truth. Sorry if you don't like it.
Then again your type never can handle the truth. Just like Dick Cheney says.
Ladies,
Deion Sanders just said Peyton Manning CHOKED on the NFL Network.
Winning, Dick Cheney said it, too. And Cheney, a great man, means more than Nicholson, some Hollywood communist liberal.
Mark.............Being a rocket scientist I imagine you got the quote mixed up. It was JACK NICHOLSON IN "A FEW GOOD MEN' WHO SAID THAT BEFORE DICK CHENEY.
Mark, purely because I'm laughing my ass off over here... you do know that socialism and fascism are at complete opposite ends of the political spectrum, yes?
Man, you're hilarious. Sleep it off. Sleep it off. Good luck with your hangover.
Bear Market......................I have to agree with you on the ads.....they all sucked. When I saw Tebows ad I said "Thats all they're is and they're complaining about that?
Favres probably was the best but still no great shakes!
What a despicable comment about Dungy's son. Depression is a disease my friend, fathers and mothers and brothers and sisters lose loved ones to it daily. Your insensitivity is remarkable, it's a wonder people like you can sleep at night. You truly make a wonderful contribution to the world, gracias.
Mark - football's all about opinions, and disagreements are all part of it, yadda yadda. But your comment about Tony Dungy's son are just disgusting. Get some perspective.
America hardly needs another father who failed at his personal responsibilities in the nuclear family. Such weakness has caused 9/11 and the downturn in our economy.
Only by practicing fatherhood in the manner of Dick Cheney will America overcome the domestic and international terrorist threats that it faces and allow its great free-market system to outperform all others.
Tony Dungy, like so many African-American fathers, was not home when his presence his discipline, and his son required.
Tony Dungy receives only the responsibility for those failings NOW that he failed to display when it was necessary and that led to the loss of a human life.

Mark I'm all for free speech here, one comment to TonyD. is way out of line.
As for Tebow's ad, it was a new way to discuss a topic used to hosting conflict over the different viewpoints. Not agreeing with everything on the point of view cannot limit appreciation for Tebow being positive and his having such a great life outlook.
You pantywaists make me sick.
Whatever happened to personal responsibility and family values?
Or do personal responsibility and family values only apply to your non-hero failed father football coaches?
And you wonder why we're losing to al Qaeda? Why the economy is in the toilet? Why 10 percent of Real Americans are out of work? Why bankers are robbing us blind? Why Washington, D.C. and your state leaders whine like little girls? Why the Pentagon can't find bin Laden and mount him on a stake on the White House lawn? Why you're working harder and making less? Why the stock market's in the tank?
All of you. So weak and willing to make excuses for some phony idol.
Why don't you spend all of your time coddling Peyton Manning in his time of struggle and need? Right before he signs his $100 million contract with the separate $40 million signing bonus.
NEVER hold anyone responsible.
NEVER emphasize family values.
NEVER require a man to be accountable for his actions.
NEVER get anything done.
Just curl your hair, paint your nails, and blame somebody else. That's your game.
mark I think that this country is never going to move forward until we get rid of people like you. Your comment about tony dungy and african americans is the reason this country is where it is. Tony dungys comment about the superbowl has nothing to do about losing his son. I wonder if you have a son are may are may be bleesed one day to have a son and this horrible thing happened to your family and if a africa american wrote what you put how you would take his comment. You need help buddy.
Mark......................Your views show no idea of perspective between football and reality in the outside world and don't even give a legitimate arguement. I've come to the conclusion you are simply ( or simple) a PYROTECHNICIAN OR NOISEMAKER LOOKING FOR ATTENTION.
TAKE YOUR MEDICATION !

Thanks for the great football season @ NFP, tipper.
If you don't support anything that threatens a women's right to choose, then you should not support abortion. Not only does it deny a baby's (girl or boy) right to choose, it denies a baby's right to life, the most basic right.

Good thig they lost in week 16... wouldnt want to be 18-1 right Polian?
Good to see Peyton back to his old tricks. It was like 2001-2007 out there all over again.
What was it that Dungy said? That is would be a boring game? Over by half time? Colts would be too far ahead for a Saints comeback? Thanks for the insight Tony.
I bet Polian tries to revamp the catch to the ground rules after the two point conversion call.
