New Orleans Saints inside linebacker Jonathan Vilma was placed on injured reserve, ending his season and casting doubt on his NFL future.

The Saints have re-signed cornerback Chris Carr.

Vilma, 31, is in the last year of his contract.

Vilma has played for the Saints since 2008.

Vilma played a dozen snaps last Sunday against the New York Jets.

Vilma had been on injured reserve-designated to return after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, which has caused him problems for years.

Since 2011, he's had four knee surgeries on his left knee.
