Sam Hurd indicted by federal grand jury on drug charges

Former Chicago Bears wide receiver was indicted today on federal drug conspiracy and possession charges and potentially could face up to life in prison if convicted.

Hurd, who also played for the Dallas Cowboys, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Dallas. He and co-defendant Toby Lujan face counts of cocaine possession and conspiracy to possess cocaine. The indictment seeks forfeiture of $88,000 in cash by Lujan and a 2010 Cadillac Escalade belong to Hurd, the Associated Press reports.

Hurd was arrested by federal authorities outside a Chicago restaurant on Dec. 14. Two days later, the Bears waived him. He is free on $100,000 bond.

Authorities allege Hurd wanted to buy up to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 100 pounds of marijuana per week.
