Wide receiver making adjustments with Jets Aaron Wilson
Traded to the New York Jets this offseason for a fifth-round draft pick after a rocky end of his tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers, wide receiver Santonio Holmes is embracing the fresh start.
Holmes, who has to serve a four-game suspension for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy, is getting acclimated to his new surroundings.
Holmes caught a career-high 79 passes last season. For his career in Pittsburgh, he registered 235 receptions and 20 touchdowns in four seasons.
“They know what I’m capable of doing on the field, but now that I’m playing for a new team and I’m playing a backup role, how am I going to react to that?” Holmes told the New York Post. “That’s what these guys are probably looking forward to seeing. I’ve never been a selfish guy. I’ve always been team-first.
“I was very comfortable in Pittsburgh and now I’m trying to find my way here, and these guys have welcomed me with open arms.I know where I’ve been and I know where I want to go, and I’ve got to bring that to this team. That’s what these guys are looking for, that leadership lead by example, which I can portray.”
Holmes has made a lot of plays already during offseason practices.
“He’s a special talent, that’s for sure,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “He’s that talent we thought he was. He’s come in here, the guys have accepted Santonio with open arms and he’s been terrific in here.”
