The Seattle Seahawks are banking on Charlie Whitehurst eventually being a worthy successor to incumbent quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

According to ESPN, the Seahawks have agreed to a move to obtain Whitehurst from the San Diego Chargers.

Per the report, Seattle will send a 2011 third-round draft pick and move down 20 positions in the second round of this year's draft to San Diego for Whitehurst. The Seahawks don't have a third-round pick in this year's draft, so they had to work out a trade to acquire him.

Plus, the Seahawks have agreed to a two-year contract with the former Clemson quarterback that will average $5 million annually.

Whitehurst has performed well during the preseason, but hasn't played in a real NFL game while toiling behind starter Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek.

Whitehurst is a player with upside, but he'll need to do a lot to justify the Seahawks' hefty investment.

I'm very upset. This draft is supposed to be the deepest since 1983. So our 2nd round draft choice at number 40 is really the same as a 1st round draft choice any other year. I mean we could of drafted a top quality running back or wide receiver at that spot. Or If you really wanted a quarterback, we could have drafted Tim Tebow or Colt McCoy and allowed him to develop for a year under Matt Hasselback. Our next pick is not until the forth round. Were giving away our future for a 3rd string backup that is 28 years old. I mean really.

I've been waiting for Whitehurst to get his shot since he came out four years ago. His dilemma was being stuck behind Phillip Rivers.

Expect to get to know Whitehurst on Sundays starting in 2011.

Brilliant move...this guy is a potential Pro Bowler. He'll be starting by week four because Hasselbeck is made of glass.

The ladder isn't tall for him, he should make this move well.

charlie who? i know people dont like michel vick because of the dogs. i dont like it either, but i think he is a proven player and he is very good. i also think hasselback shouldve been replaced years ago. why didnt you get micheal vick and use him as a starter. thats what this team needs is a very good qb ,a very big offensive lineman and a defensive big man to plow through and get the line.i wish i could do this the people of seattle have been very good to you even if you stink.

this absolutely ridiculous! Fine if you dont wanna draft Clausen at six i get it (although i would) but why waste valuable picks on an unproven, old man who is 3rd on the depth chart at SD. What i dont get is how Brady Quinn a first round QB equates to lower compensation than one who ahs not even thrown a pass. I give the carrol and whitehurst marriage two years! If we dont have a diivsion title in the NFC worst they can both go back to colleeg where they belong. The longer Hasselbeck is the starter the better!

This is a great thing for the Chargers... This allows us to take Terrence Cody or Dan Williams in round one and hope that Ryan Matthews is still there in round two, even if I'd rather have Montario Hardesty when all is said and done.
Or, if both NTs are gone in round one, take Matthews at 28 and take Cam Thomas a bit later.
The one thing I really love: we are ahead of the Bills in round two. They will take OT or QB in round one so they would have taken a NT for their 3-4 D in round two. The only team that could annoy us is KC but my guess is they go offense early.

One last thing... If Whitehurst becomes a decent starting QB in Seattle, then the price will look cheap in retrospect. That's why they did it. You have to swing for the fences at the QB position and they probably didn't really like any of the QB in this year's class. As to why Brady Quinn was cheaper ? Because he's ceiling right now seems to become a poor man's Chad Pennington... At least Whitehurst has upside and that's what Seattle paid for.

I really don't understand the upset from the Seattle fans. Whitehurst is a Matt Schaub-type QB with a big arm. He has learned under one of the best offensive coaches around, Norv Turner. They got him for a steal. A third rounder in '11, are you kidding me? Moving down a few spots in the second is not that big a deal. Picks are crapshoots anyway by that point. Seattle still has two firsts and can score some serious talent.

I think getting Vick was also a decent plan, but I highly doubt Philly would let him go for this sort of compensation. He's also a lot older than Whitehurts and brings a lot of baggage to ultra-PC Seattle. I think Whitehurst is both better and far more ready to play than any QB in the draft.

Lotta dough for a 29 year old who couldn't beat out Billy Volek for 2nd string QB.

Senneca Wallace wasn't going anywhere whith the Hawks fast, so that trade with the Browns was a no brainer. I don't agree spending two future draft picks on a third string starter..

How does a 3rd string QB who has never thrown an NFL pass have unlimited potential? He hasnt even been in a game for garbage time! Yet again the seahawks prove why they are an awful franchise.

Wanna know the difference between Schaub and Whitehurst...playing time. Only an idiot would would say a QB who hasnt thrown a pass in a game in 4 years, is the savior of a franchise. And only a worthless franchise would give up good draft picks, and a lot of money, to get him.

Whitehurst is a hell of a quarterback... For those of you who don't know who he is, he is a Clemson University GREAT!!!! More comebacks wins, touchdowns, and yards than any other QB in Clemson history... When he gets his shot he WILL be a great player...

I think most of the disgurntled so called Seahawk fans are really Bronco fans. Denver will only get a 2nd round out of Seattle for Marshall, and they are just mad that the pick is now 20 pick's lower. Granted not that big of a deal in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

Difference between Shaub and Whitehurst isn't the playing time, its the fact Whitehurst has been coached be the Best QB coach, the League has seen in several generations.
Getting Whitehurst for a 3rd rounder is a good deal. Guy has talent, has been well coached, doesn't have a lot of Mental baggage, like Andersond, Vick, and Wallace. Those 3 have been well used and abused on the field, were Whitehurst has been well groomed, and if it wasn't Rivers he would still be with San Diego. Volek backing up Rivers, just helped keep down any possible future issues of who should start incase Rivers was down for sometime before he could comeback in.

Charlie is such a great talent. If i had a team i would definitely big him up. He will be a starter in the NFL.
