The family of former linebacker Junior Seau has sued the NFL on a wrongful death claim, stemming from the brain damage they say was caused by playing football, reports the Associated Press.

Seau, who shot himeslf last May, was discovered to have CTE, a degenerative brain condition that has been found in a number of football players who have died tragically in recent years.

According to the lawsuit filed in California Superior Court in San Diego, the litigation blames the NFL for "acts or omissions" regarding repetitive blows to the head that led to concussions suffered by Seau in his career.

"We know this lawsuit will not bring back Junior. But it will send a message that the NFL needs to care for its former players, acknowledge its decades of deception on the issue of head injuries and player safety, and make the game safer for future generations," the family said in a statement.
