Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware will undergo surgery on his right shoulder with a goal of preventing it from dislocating in the future.

Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports the hope is Ware will be ready to return to action in time for training camp, indicating this is a serious surgery that will require a lengthy rehabilitation process. It’s not uncommon though. Players who suffer frequent subluxations will undergo the surgery to tighten the joint and prevent it from popping out.

Per Archer, a determination has not yet been made on whether or not Ware will also require surgery on his hyperextended right elbow. That situation is not deemed to be as serious.

Ware will be replaced in the Pro Bowl after being named for the seventh time in his career. By the time he’s ready for on-field action again, perhaps he will be learning a new position. The Cowboys could be making the move to a 4-3 front after firing defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
