Showers to Texas Tech makes a lot of sense
Believe it or not, Johnny Manziel was not the leading candidate to begin the 2012 season as Texas A&M's starting quarterback. That spot was occupied by Jameill Showers, a fellow dual-threat signal-caller who was the backup to Ryan Tannehill during his redshirt freshman season in 2011.

But Manziel ultimately won the job in fall camp, led the Aggies to an impressive debut campaign in the SEC and became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.
So with a starting job no longer in the future in College Station, Showers has decided to transfer.
Once thought to be primed to put up huge numbers in Kevin Sumlin's system, Showers has been granted his release from A&M, according to Billy Luicci of TexAgs.com.
Showers leaves College Station after completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 359 yards with 72 yards on the ground and three total touchdowns. He saw a little bit of action behind Tannehill in 2011, but he received extended play this past fall behind Manziel when the Aggies had big leads, including against Auburn, when Showers went 8-for-8 for 59 yards and one score.
So with intriguing freshman Matt Davis and rising junior Matt Joeckel moving up A&M's depth chart, where will Showers land?
One spot that makes perfect sense is Texas Tech, where former Aggies offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will be entering his first season as head coach of the Red Raiders. While Showers initially chose A&M over Baylor, Missouri and Purdue, moving onto Lubbock would provide Showers with a comfortable new home in a familiar system. The Killeen, TX, product also would be able to stay in-state and have a chance to play right away with Seth Doege out of eligibility. Showers could compete for the starting spot immediately because he could graduate from A&M in the summer and still have two years of eligibility remaining,
Keep in mind that Showers almost beat out the Heisman Trophy winner for the starting job last fall — that's how much talent he possesses.
If there is mutual interest between Showers and the Red Raiders, landing in Lubbock could provide the former Aggie with the best opportunity to finally showcase such talent on a week-to-week basis.
