A league source tells the National Football Post that while line coach Larry Zierlein has been bounced from Pittsburgh, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians can return to his post under coach Mike Tomlin in 2010 if he desires.

Arians and the offense came under fire during the season, particularly as the season unraveled during the second half of the season. But the job is his if he would like to come back. Of course, he’ll be working with a new line coach, but the Steelers need to revamp what they were doing upfront to make some improvements after they went from winning the Super Bowl to finishing out of the playoffs this season.

Stay tuned.

Good God, please let this story be wrong.

Please.

Please.

"Undeserved criticism"? Are you kidding me? He created and promoted a one-dimensional offense with inconsistency and poor play calling. Today's game doesn't mandate an all out passing philosophy. 7th in passing and 19th in rushing doesn't impress me. He has got to go and the Steelers can get back to a balanced offensive game. He may be a "hot" commodity when he's gone but only with desperate, losing teams looking for a change.

I was actually happy to hear this. It means the organization is still too smart to give in to knee-jerk reactions and the mob of Steeler fans that want Arians' head -- literally, I think. Arians is not a perfect playcaller by any means, and he needs to improve in a number of areas next season. But this offense is close, so close, to being ridiculously good. You don't completely retool when you are that close, you tweak things. Of all the valid criticisms to level at the man, the fact that people point to not running the ball enough is absurd. Did you see that abortion of an o-line this year? They did not get better than last year; I think solid games against a banged-up, soft San Diego D and an undersized Denver D made people think they were improving. You cannot run behind a line this bad, ESPECIALLY not in the red zone, where there is no deep vertical threat to keep the D honest. I'm glad they canned Zierlien, and if I never see Trai Essex or Willie Colon manning the right side of the line again, then I will be truly happy. Give Arians some real linemen on that side, and let's see what happens.

To the Arians' apologists out there, I have two words to sum up my argument against him keeping his job:

Pitch right.

If Arians is half as good as some of his apologists say then why has he not been picked for one of the many coaching openings in the NFL? Arians was Peyton's QB coach his rookie year and we all know how that went. Nobody in the NFL wants him except Tomlin.
