Team remains open to trading linebacker for right deal after trade talks during the draft Aaron Wilson
The San Diego Chargers conducted trade discussions regarding star linebacker Shawne Merriman with at least two teams during the NFL draft, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
However, the Chargers and those teams encountered a major obstacle in those conversations. Prospective contract talks about an extension with other NFL teams went absolutely nowhere with Merriman's representatives, so any potential deal ran into the proverbial brick wall.
The Chargers were definitely open to the idea of trading Merriman and remain open to the possibility, per a source with knowledge of the AFC West franchise's thinking. Still, no serious proposals unfolded for the standout pass rusher contractually.
Merriman can't be traded at this point, too, because he's a restricted free agent who has yet to sign his one-year tender. He has signed an injury waiver so he can join his teammates at the offseason conditioning program.
The Chargers and Merriman aren't involved in any discussions toward a contract that would keep him in San Diego on a long-term basis.
It doesn't appear that the Chargers are inclined to do anything for Merriman at this point. So, the most likely scenario that will unfold is he spends this season in San Diego.
