The Washington Redskins have signed veteran free agent defensive lineman Howard Green to a one-year contract, according to a league source.
The deal includes playing-time incentives.
The transaction suggests that the Redskins are making preparations to replace Albert Haynesworth, who is on the trading block.
Green played for Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett with the New Orleans Saints, so he has a strong connection there.
Green is expected to compete for the starting job at nose guard.
Green, 31, is a 6-foot-2, 320-pound former LSU player who was drafted in the sixth round in the 2002 NFL draft by the Houston Texans.
He played last season for the New York Jets and has previous stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Saints and the Baltimore Ravens.
In a dozen games last season with the Jets, who made it to the AFC championship game, Green recorded 23 tackles.
For his career, Green has registered 78 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles.
