With the news that the Oakland Raiders are poised to release disappointing former top overall pick JaMarcus Russell, we're hearing some details about where Russell stands from a conditioning standpoint.

And it's not a positive development.

According to a league source with knowledge of the situation in Oakland, the hefty quarterback has beefed up to 300 pounds.

We're also told that the former LSU star isn't getting good advice from his family.

"It's a drag on the kid and they encourage his poor lifestyle," an NFL source told National Football Post.

We're told that Russell receives strong, positive support from his mother and grandmother. He has a tattoo of both women on his arm.

With Russell's big contract, lack of conditioning, the acquisition of Jason Campbell and the presence of Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski, the handwriting is carved into the wall on this one.

Any beached whale sightings in the Bay Area? Jamarcus isn't tipping the scales, he bent the damned thing and you need to order a new one for him. Factory specs on the next one, load him onto it with a forklift....

I guess I should know better, but I am just stunned... It seems like deep down he knew early in his pro career that he was never going to be good enough and so he stopped putting in the physical and mental effort. "Let's just see how long I can stay on the roster without doing a whole lot..." Wonder what the bad advice he's getting from family is -- probably something along the lines of "those coaches don't know what they're talking about, your just fine..."

I'm starting to feel sorry for the kid. It's obvious that something's wrong in is life and hopefully he can turn his life around.

People that work for the Raiders do not know what is going on with the Raiders. A outside source as you call them would know as much about the Raiders and what was going on with them as I would. Forgive me I am a Raider Fan, of course I would know more.

Last Russell will be going no place anytime soon.

But he can throw a ball 50 yards on his knees. Pick him #1 overall!

He'll be a good project for someone. He needs to lose about 60 pounds first, though.

His fat ass will get cut this week or next. Anyone want to start a pool to see how quickly he files for bankruptcy?

I think he is a bigger bust then Leaf. Granted they both have the work ethic of a 1st grader, Russell's numbers as a QB have been the lowest for any QB in the NFL for the last 20 years. At least Leaf posted higher numbers.

Does Russell speak English or is it just jibberish? Whenever he was being interviewed I always was waiting for the subtitles. I could never understand a word coming out of his mouth. And when you could he sounded like someone that didn't know how to form a cohearent sentence.

The dude is a loser.

The Raiders will release Russell in an unusual way.

They're gonna have the Coast Guard push him back in the water.

I don't know if you all heard the story/rumor of the coach giving him a DVD to take home and look at a few plays/schemes. When he was aked what he thought about the DVD he said it was good or interesting, however the DVD given to him was blank.

I've heard this in more than one place.

If this is true ya gotta cut ties with this guy. I gotta say I was his biggest supporter and could see his ability and even some progress, but weight gain and no passion to play or lead nullifies anything this guy could have been.

I've been a Raider for over 40 years and everyone seems like family, so seeing this happen to JaMarcus is so disappointing. Unlike many, I believe he had the potential to be good, but something made him not *want* it and correspondingly, to work for it. Maybe he just doesn't like to play football?? Who knows, but he is a Raider - even if for a little while longer, and as such, I think we as Raider fans need to be respectful and hope that he either gets some help (if something is wrong) or heads down a path that works for him if football is not that path. And lets drop the black and white stuff...damn, you'd think that would get old at some point.

Who was the bigger bust Russell, Leaf or Marinovich? Funny how folks have forgotten ol' Todd.

How quickly we forget department.................didn't the raiders make a huge deal about how russell showed up svelte and like a new man? They made it a point to get this information out to the public, and now we learn it was nothing but bs? The Raiders had a great draft, what was so very obvious was that "the cancer" on the team was not interfering with Coach Cable's Draft, but let this Russell "development" (wink wink) always remind us that "the cancer", while perhaps in remission, is still very much able to reach out and reak havoc upon the recovering body that is Cable's Raiders.

I'd like to take a moment and say "thanks" to Tom for his undying efforts on behalf of the Oakland Raiders. Many of us have been behind you from the start and that is going to make this coming success all the much sweeter, because we know who is responsible for the rising fortunes of this ball club.

I am not close to a supporter of Jabust i wanted calvin johnson ..desperately
but i remember well all the "draft experts"saying we hafta take russell we need a QB soo bad blah blah blah blah ...and no one thought we would take russell cause al davis is crazy and dont draft Qb's in the first round and calvin johnson was a freak athlete and we would take him .....LOL

we did what everyone wanted and thought we should do (save a select few)
and of course we still are the worst drafting team ever .. funny how we have tons of starters from years past drafts from the later rounds

No matter what we do the raiders will always beat the whooping post of the NFL the most beloved and hated team of all time !

thats why i bleed blk n silver

DAVEOAK What did you expect them to do say the kids fat enough to sub for a killer whale at Ocean World and have any team ask us for the house and everything in it in a trade for a regular sized QB.
That was the smart way to do it now we got JC on the cheap, Grads and a couple of other guys who actually want to play in the nfl.

Jamarcus? He'll be the new killer whale at Ocean World. Won't get 9Mil for that, maybe if he can jump through a hoop he might get a few thousand sardines, that will keep him happy.

I wonder when he pawns all the bling probably paid a mil for it, he will be lucky to get 50K

Jamarcus Russell, this if the most dissapointing this about the fat SOB, at leat try, at some point PRIDE AND SELF RESPECT have to kick in, does he not have that, did he play us all for fools, he must have known that he would be worthless because he dosen't even care, good riddens, Im' so digusted by this guy that it is a shame to the NFL that he even has a job, for the sake of the sport, JUST GO AWAY and keep all the money that you didn't deserve,

If you have any respect fror the GREAT RAIDER ORGANIZATION, you would volunteer to work out the the tightends and the O line for fat POS.

that's all for now, ONLY THIS FAT PIECE OF @#$%*& CAN GET ME THIS WORKED UP IN APIRL, not even training camp yet.

Ryan Leaf is still the biggest bust. Leaf threw 14 td's and 36 ints, Russell threw 13 td's in 2008 alone. Frustrating as he showed talent that year, last year he was a joke, just wasnt bothered at all. Big shame.

You know I wouldn't be all that surprised if he didn't know how to read.
I gaurntee you he coasted through college without much of an effort cause he played sports.
That is eveident by how much work he put in with the Raiders to make it in the NFL.
I'd bet his 30 million that he has been handed everything since he was little because he had athletic talent and just coasted through life doing the absolute minimum he had to do to succeed.
Hard to break old habits. Doesn't matter now, once the Raiders cut him he is done in the NFL. Who is going to want to sign him? How many coaches lost their job because of him? I'm glad Hugh Jackson doesn't have to put up with his B.S. Hugh is too good a guy to be made to look like a fool. Which is exactly what Russell would have done to him, just like he did with every other O.C. that Oakland has had since they drafted him.
Jason Campbell can win in this league. The trade for him was a very smart solid move. I find it hard seeing Al Davis pulling the trigger for it. Seems more like a Cable move to me. But I like it.

I'm in agreement with Torch up above: put him in as a DT, or maybe even an OT. Use him on the line for the practice squad. He knows enough of the plays to zone block until he gets injured or gets too hungry or some such.
