With the news that the Oakland Raiders are poised to release disappointing former top overall pick JaMarcus Russell, we're hearing some details about where Russell stands from a conditioning standpoint.

And it's not a positive development.

According to a league source with knowledge of the situation in Oakland, the hefty quarterback has beefed up to 300 pounds.

We're also told that the former LSU star isn't getting good advice from his family.

"It's a drag on the kid and they encourage his poor lifestyle," an NFL source told National Football Post.

We're told that Russell receives strong, positive support from his mother and grandmother. He has a tattoo of both women on his arm.

With Russell's big contract, lack of conditioning, the acquisition of Jason Campbell and the presence of Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski, the handwriting is carved into the wall on this one.

Dude I wish somebody would pay me 68 million dollars to go to the NFL and completely suck. I know for a fact that I could play as well if not better than JaMarcus Russell, and I am 5'9" and have down syndrome.

I have been a Raider fan for more years than most of you have been alive. The past 5 years or so have been the worst. I am so tired of the team that I love and hate losing all the time. I think getting JaMarcus is one the dumbest things this team has ever done. He is a waste I can't believe his lake of character. I hope Cable can turn things around we deserve it as their fans. I will never give up on my Raiders, but it sure would be nice to have a group of guys that truely believe in the Just Win Baby philosophy!!! Go Raider Nation!!!

Lets not even joke about making JaMarcus a DT or OT. Do you know how insulting that is to those guys? Those guys WORK their asses off. It would be easier for him to become a matador than a DT or OT.. His new job must require someone who is really LAZY...

I would say Leaf was more of a moron then Russell. For the most part Russell has been quiet about everything. Leaf has been on TV as a jacka... yelling and cursing out people. He also is now on probation. Oh and one last note on Leaf, as I am a Raider fan I'm happy to say that Leaf was more of a bust cuz he was a Charger.

Worst QB ever. Worse than Ryan Leaf. Worse than Cade McNown. Worse than Andre Ware. Worse than Tim Couch. Worse than Akili Smith. Worse than Anthony Wright. Worse than Tony Banks. Forget about biggest bust, forget about 1st round draft picks, JaMarcus is quite possibly the worst NFL player ever. No motivation, no heart, no accuracy and questionable skills (really, if you threw a pass 50 yards from your knees in a game, your knees are still down, it'd serve the same purpose as getting sacked).

Personally I feel sorry for the guy. There has to be something seriously wrong with him if all reports are true. I really thought that he was going to turn things around after watching him win the Denver game last year.

At least Jamarcus gave us one great moment. 40 million to beat the Bronco's in Denver at the very end. Sweeeeet!!!!!

Yet another wasted destructive draft pick from our once great.. now sad leader, Al.
It is hard to comment on Russel without sounding at least a bit racist.. i think a lot of his issues stem from his upbringing.. probabley does not know how to handel money, nor does his family.. He was basically used,,, like so many others, at the college level.. not educated or encouraged to mature..now he will have to..

Jamarcus will be on Inside The Lines with Jeremy Schaap crying about how broke he
is and how he wishes he would have worked hard. " A fool and his money will soon
part". LSU puts out some good pros but they also put out some lazy unproductive players.
Ex: Cecil Collins, Jamarcus Russell,Claude Wroten, Glen Dorsey, Tyson Jackson(dt chiefs),THe WR for the Chiefs, and Craig Davis.

Over It, I don't think your comments are the least bit racist . I echo your sentiments
and I actually think that the guy got his payday and then decided that he liked the
money and the lifestyle a lot more than the game. I remember seeing him after a game
in front of the podium on NFL Network with the platinum chain around his neck and all
that and I was like this guy just wants the money. His family probably just looks at him
as a lottery ticket and his granny and mommy just coddle him. If I were a teammate of his,
especially a star player, I would pick a fight with him in the locker room in front of everyone
and beat him down. Make him sh*t or get off the pot.

$30 million dollars will buy a lot of Big Mac's. Now his whole family can get fat with him. I never wanted him in the draft to begin with. Is he a bigger bust than Leaf? You bet'cha. He'll have a legacy of that distinction for many decades to come.

Ryan was the bigger bust! Russel at least had ONE respectable year, his second year in the league, with 13tds, 8ints, 54% comp, 2400 yds, and a 77.1 qb rating. The last six games of that season he had a higher qb rating than Matt Ryan. He played just a few games his rookie season, with his last game of the season looking promising against the chargers. Last year was the only real disappointment. And even last year he led two game winning drives in the closing seconds to beat Denver and KC. The guy has all the potential. He could do it in this league. Something just went wrong in his head last year, and I think it had a lot to do with his uncles dying. And food is probably his comfort vice. We all have one, and that is his. Just because he's making millions doesn't mean he isn't human. I feel bad the guy's career/legacy will probably be judged by his 3rd season meltdown.

"So who is the bigger bust Russell or Leaf?"

It HAS to be Russell. He was signed for a $39Mil bonus, Leaf was signed for 13Mil bonus. Both were first round draft choices, but a 26 million difference is a lot of coin.

JaMarcus now has more chins than a Hong Kong telephone directory. They say he has more pounds than the Bank of England. The circus actually bought his underwear and made it into a tent. When he went to the zoo all the elephants would throw the peanuts at him. He wore a yellow raincoat and people yelled taxi. The last time the landlord saw him he doubled the rent. When he bent over he got arrested at the airport for fifty pounds of crack. He now uses a toilet brush to clean his belly button. He's so fat his cereal bowl comes with a lifeguard. After sex he rolls over and smokes a ham.

I seems Russell would be a bigger bust than Leaf, but when checking the numbers, Leaf may still hold the title. I don't know, it's pretty close. It's like comparing two piles of crap to one another and asking which one stinks the worst..

I'll still never understand how people didn't see that he wasn't all he was cracked up to be before the draft. All the warning signs were there, yet many chose to ignore them. I wasn't a very happy camper the day Al Davis drafted this kid. The sooner he's sent packing, the better.

Hats off to Russell's agent for that pay day. Only Oakland would agree to a $39 million signing bonus. Heck, I'd get fat and semi retire before I played a down too if I got that type of pay day. Wheres the motivation to succeed when you're swimming in that kind of money.

Oakland management = the worst

"Ryan Leaf is still the biggest bust. Leaf threw 14 td's and 36 ints, Russell threw 13 td's in 2008 alone. Frustrating as he showed talent that year, last year he was a joke, just wasnt bothered at all. Big shame."
__________________________________________________________
Yeah, but if you throw in all of the times Russell fumbled because he wouldn't get rid of the ball, it's probably a toss up there. I still think that Russell hurt his team more. His contract was much higher, and the team stayed with him more consistently. Furthermore, at least the Chargers used Leaf's horrible performance to draft LT. While they may have now moved on without him, it was LT that helped bring the Chargers back from their Leaf inspired oblivion. What did the Raiders get out of their horrible years with Russell? Darren McFadden (an average runner who can't pass block) and Darius Heyward-Bey (a speedy receiver who can't catch). Ouch. Sure, Russell isn't responsible for the Raiders poor draft picks, but since they didn't profit from Russell's poor play, all things being considered, he hurt the Raiders more than Leaf hurt the Chargers franchise.

I watched him down 4....count em' FOUR colosseum dogs in one sitting at a Warriors game, Im 6'1 and I weigh 225 and I cant do that......He's a lazy fat A$$ glutton with no sense of discipline. Them dogs are John Holmes sized. And he downed at least 3 22 oz. beers...... saw him in Lake tahoe last year and was close enough to him to hear him speak....Did they NOT interview this guy? He is ignorant and backwoods as they come. His vocabulary is the same as a 6 year old, ...with bad pronunciation. How did he make it thru college? (Oh wait....LSU I forgot) anyways.... cut the the dude already, maybe the lions will pick him up to beef up their offensive line...

Life-long Charger fan here; and my life goes back to the first days of the AFL. Believe me, I know what you Raider fans are suffering through. Leaf vs Russell? Toss-up really; each is the biggest bust of their generation. Leaf's stats were worse, but Russell started with way more potential than Leaf, so his flop is relatively bigger. I think the big difference is that Leaf was *never* a character guy; everything about Leaf was a red flag. Russell has devolved into what he is today, probably because of bad influence in his life. I don't buy the "Russell is lazy and worthless" bit, I really don't. I think he's been mislead into thinking he can get by on talent and potential. The real crime here, and I feel for you guys, is that the game has passed Davis by. He has to stop drafting guys because they're physical freaks. It's really cool that Russell could through the ball through the uprights from his knees at the 50-yard line, but last time I checked, you don't get points for doing that in a game. Heyward-Bey is fast, fast, fast, but you don't score if you don't have the ball, and the guy can't catch a cold. Murphy is way better, and he was, what a 5th rounder? Maybe McClain will make the defense into a world beater, but the defense wasn't all that bad before. In college, McClain didn't show the ability to cover a RB or TE, and wasn't that the knock on Kirk Morrison (who only lead the AFC West in tackles for what, 5 years in a row or something sick like that)? People are raving about Oakland's draft this year, and maybe it was great, but I don't see it yet.

I was pissed when we took Russell. Equally pissed when we took DHB. The one that really got me was when we picked up the man who single handedly destroyed the Idaho Vandals rising football program. I see some people sticking up for Cable. Sometimes the coach is the problem even if Al thinks hes great.

2007 Oakland JaMarcus Russell, QB LSU
2005 San Francisco Alex Smith, QB Utah
2002 Houston David Carr, QB, Fresno State

Maybe the San Francisco 49er can use him. They now have 2 number 1 over picks. If they add Russell, they will have 3 QB that are failures and did live up to expectations.

RaiderTill I Die said it best! The biggest problem with JR is his disrespect for not only the Raiders, but the entire NFL. I will always dislike the man for his self entitled BS attitude. How the hell does he think he is entitled to all that money without EVER putting in one ounce of effort. I believe in karma and that man will get his. LSU must be a horrible university if a kid like JR can make it through several years of school. The NCAA should investigate them, there must be some rules bending going on if a man of JR's IQ made it onto their team and then pass classes to stay eligible. Also Al should be ashamed of himself for not doing his due diligence on the kid before he drafted him.
