Jets lineman to become highest paid center in the league Aaron Wilson
The New York Jets are on the verge of finalizing a seven-year, $55 million contract with All-Pro center Nick Mangold, an NFL source with knowledge of the situation confirmed tonight.
The final details, including the exact guaranteed money figure, were still being negotiated. However, no snag is expected and the deal is scheduled to be signed and announced as soon as Tuesday.
Per a source, Mangold's deal will top St. Louis Rams center Jason Brown's five-year, $37.5 million contract that included $20 million in guaranteed money.
The pending deal was first reported by the Newark Star-Ledger.
Heading into the final year of his rokie deal, Mangold was due $3.3 million this season.
“You lock up the best center in football,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said earlier today in remarks distributed by the team. “That would be a huge thing for our franchise.”
Mangold was reluctant to say much about the status of the talks earlier today after practice.
"I'm not talking contract," Mangold said. "Been advised not to."
The former Ohio State standout acknowledged, though, that this is extremely important to him.
"You obviously want the security, you want to have that," Mangold said. "In the end, me wanting to play football and me wanting to help out my offensive line overrode the compelling thought of not having the security. It's one of those decisions you make"
Meanwhile, no deal is imminent or close with star cornerback Darrelle Revis.
