Bills rookie wide receiver could have returned in September Aaron Wilson
Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Marcus Easley is recovering well following knee surgery and is now off crutches, according to an NFL source with knowledge of the situation.
Per a source, Easley didn't tear his anterior cruciate ligament and could have returned to play as soon as the first month of the regular season.
However, the Bills opted to shut down the fourth-round draft pick for the entire regular season.
When the Bills placed Easley and sixth-round linebacker Danny Batten on injured reserve recently, Bills coach Chan Gailey indicated that they would be out too long to try to play either rookie this season.
"Obviously, it’s not what we wanted but it’s just something that had to be done looking at the long term prognosis for both of them," Gailey said. "We just couldn’t see, time-wise, that it was going to benefit them to try to make it back this year. I think it was about what they thought to be honest with you. I didn’t tell you, but I knew it had a chance to not be good."
Signed to a four-year deal with a total base value of roughly $2.31 million that includes a signing bonus of almost $520,000, Easley was elected 107th overall and is first wide receiver from the University of Connecticut to be selected in the NFL draft.
The 6-foot-2, 207-pounder led the Huskies with 48 receptions for 893 yards and eight touchdowns last season after catching only five passes during his previous two seasons.
He was named second-team All-Big East Conference.
For his career, Easley finished with 53 receptions for 997 yards.
