Source: Patriots worked out Andre Carter

The New England Patriots worked out defensive end Andre Carter on Monday, according to a league source.

Carter last played for the Patriots in 2011 when he recorded 10 sacks before injuring his quadriceps tendon and being placed on injured reserve.

He wasn't immediately signed to a contract.

The 34-year-old signed a one-year contract this offseason to go back to the Oakland Raiders, but didn't make the final roster cut. He had 2 1/2 sacks last season in a dozen games for the Raiders.

Carter is a former 49ers first-round draft pick from Cal who has 78 1/2 career sacks.
