The Pittsburgh Steelers auditioned former Indianapolis Colts speed rusher Marcus Howard today, according to a league source.
The defensive end wasn't immediately signed to a contract, though.
Howard has previously tried out for the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles this season.
Howard is a converted linebaker ran the fastest 40-yard dash among the linebackers at the NFL scouting combine in 2008 with a 4.45 clocking and was drafted in the fifth round by the Colts.
At the University of Georgia, he led the Southeastern Conference in sacks as a senior with 10 1/2 sacks. He also forced three fumbles.
With the Colts as a rookie, he registered 1 1/2 sacks, had seven defensive stops, six solos, three pressures and one batted pass. He also had eight special-teams tackles.
During the preseason this year, he sacked Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford, beating offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus.
However, Howard was cut during the final major roster cutdown due to the presence of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis as the Colts carried less defensive linemen this year on the active roster.
Howard has played in nine NFL games, so he doesn't have any more practice squad eligibility.
