Veteran tackle expected to hang up his cleats Aaron Wilson
San Diego Chargers veteran offensive tackle Tra Thomas has decided to retire and has been absent from the team for the past few days while he contemplated his future, according to three NFL sources with knowledge of the situation.
Thomas, 35, has informed teammates and other members of the organization that he is planning to retire after a dozen NFL seasons and three Pro Bowl selections.
UPDATE: The Chargers have made it official, announcing that Thomas has retired in a press release.
Thomas underwent arthroscopic knee surgery earlier in training camp.
He has a history of knee problems.
For now, Brandyn Dombrowksi is playing left tackle.
This development further weakens the Chargers' depth at offensive tackle with Pro Bowl left tackle Marcus McNeill not reporting to camp due to a contract dispute.
McNeill recently met with general manager A.J. Smith, but no progress was made toward a long-term deal or a one-year adjustment to his contract.
The Chargers are believed to be amenable to working something out with McNeill, but nothing is imminent.
