The United Football League prevented Florida Tuskers kicker Nick Novak from signing with an undisclosed NFL team with commissioner Michael Huyghue denying him permission to leave the league, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Novak was offered a contract by the NFL team, and the Tuskers were willing to grant him his release to have the opportunity.

However, Huyghue blocked Novak's bid to go back to the NFL.

The NFL team was even willing to pay a $150,000 release fee to allow Novak to be freed from his UFL commitment.

Huyghue declined to accept the payment, though.

Novak kicked four field goals against the Hartford Colonials, setting a single-game UFL record for field goals as well as his 15 overall points.

Novak made the longest kick in UFL history when he booted a 54-yard field goal in the first half at Las Vegas. He made nine of his first 12 field goals and hit 10 of 10 with extra points.

The University of Maryland product has kicked for the San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, and the Washington Redskins.

Apparently, the UFL was concerned that it could start a trend if it allowed Novak to go to the NFL.

This raises the question: Does the UFL want to be a feeder league to the NFL or does it want to compete with the NFL?
