APScott Wells
The Green Bay Packers have informed the veteran center that he will be the backup to Jason Spitz this season, and they have gave Duke Preston notice that he will be released, according to a league source.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced his starting five on the offensive line on Monday, and Spitz and right guard Josh Sitton edged Wells out of a gig. Wells had been the starting center the previous three seasons, and has three years remaining on a $15 million, five-year contract. There was speculation that Wells could be traded, and Seattle is certainly in need with Chris Spencer out four to six weeks now. Green Bay, though, must be thinking about the value of having an experienced backup in place.
Preston, who signed with Green Bay in March, made 20 starts in four seasons in Buffalo, including 11 last year. He was a fourth-round pick by the Bills in 2005. By letting Preston go now, the Packers give him the courtesy of some extra time to find a new team.
They gotta hold on to Wells. He'll be needed at some point this year. If either guard gets hurt, Spitz will slide over and Wells can play center. Or heck, if Clifton gets hurt Colledge might fill in at LT and then Spitz will take his spot at guard.
Feel bad for Scott, but I hope he realizes he's the 'sixth man', and will be needed at some point in time this year, probably several times.

I had high hopes for Preston due to his size and experience. But he has disappointed. Luckily, we will retain Wells, who can still play effectively. Our depth is showing well.
