Atlanta Falcons rookie defensive tackle Corey Peters' sprained left knee isn't regarded as a serious injury, according to NFL sources with knowledge of the situation.

Peters' magnetic resonance imaging exam Friday didn't reveal any major damage to the knee. The injury was suffered against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

Instead of a long-term convalescence, Peters' recovery time is expected to last between 10 and 14 days.

The Falcons quickly announced that wide receiver Kerry Meier was out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. In Peters' case, they have been fairly close-mouthed about the injury.

We're told that should be regarded as a positive sign in terms of how the organization feels about Peters' status.

The Falcons signed Peters to a four-year contract earlier this summer with a maximum value of $3.295 million that included a $767,000 signing bonus.

The former University of Kentucky defensive lineman had impressed the coaching staff prior to the injury.

The 6-foot-3, 301-pounder was a three-year starter for the Wildcats.

He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.90 and 4.91 seconds and bench pressed 225 pounds 26 times at his Pro Day workout.
