Spikes staying with Chargers; Castillo to be let go

In two separate reports, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune says the San Diego Chargers will be keeping veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes and releasing defensive tackle Luis Castillo.

Acee quotes Chargers general manager A.J. Smith as saying Spikes, who will be readying for his 15th NFL season, will be back in San Diego for another go-around.

“Save yourself some time and ink,” Smith said from the NFL Combine. “Takeo Spikes isn’t going anywhere. He will be a Charger this season. We are very fortunate to have him as part of this situation. He’s a true professional in every sense of the word and brings a veteran presence in our locker room.”

As for Castillo, who missed most of last season with a leg injury, he will be released, according to Acee's sources, but could be re-signed to a lesser contract once he tests the free agent market.
