It’s easier for Steve Weatherford for take a dig at Mike Westhoff now that the longtime special teams coordinator has retired.

That is what Weatherford did in a Q & A with Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger. The New York Giants punter, who previously worked under Westhoff with the New York Jets, said it’s a world of difference playing for Big Blue.

It's been a dream come true,” Weatherford said. “I enjoyed playing for Rex Ryan but the special teams coach (Westhoff) was very difficult to get along with both on and off the field.

“Here, the Giants have treated me great since the moment I walked in here. I show up early and leave late and give everything I have. I think the Giants have an appreciation for that. I absolutely love being here. I'd play for free.”

Weatherford isn’t the only player Westhoff rubbed the wrong way. There were some special teams coaches around the league that didn’t care for his routine either. But he was very successful at it for a long time, starting with the Miami Dolphins in 1986 and eventually moving to the Jets in 2001. His units were generally well regarded, and sometimes folks are going question your methods even if results back them up.
