Steven Jackson will void final year of his contract

Running back Steven Jackson will void the final year of his contract in order to test free agency but there remains a possibility the St. Louis Rams’ all-time leading rusher will return.

Jackson was due to earn $7 million this coming season and the reality was the Rams were not going to pay him that. But that doesn’t mean the two sides will not be a match in the long run.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Jackson, who will turn 30 before the start of the season, could wind up with a team like the Atlanta Falcons, who are expected to shed their own veteran in Michael Turner.

Jackson was the first-round draft pick of the Rams in 2004 and has been a workhorse for them over the course of his career. Ideally, St. Louis will bring him back at a reduced rate and use some of the savings to upgrade other areas of the offense like the line or the corps of wide receivers in need of a significant talent boost.
