Tim Tebow was suited up, but did not play in Thursday night's embarrassing 49-19 loss at home to the New England Patriots.

According to Jets coach Rex Ryan, the reason Tebow did not see any action in a blowout that otherwise would have offered him an opportunity to play quarterback was simple - Tebow has two fractured ribs suffered against Seattle in week 10.

“I was only going to play Tim if we absolutely had to have him,” coach Rex Ryan told the New York Post. “You could tell he was hurting. His breathing was a little bit different. I was like ‘Shoot, I’m not going to play this kid.’ I wouldn’t play my son if it was that kind of situation.”

Which of course begs the question, then why was Tebow on the active roster in the first play. Why not suit up Greg McElroy, the third stringer, and let Tebow sit out to heal? Apparently, Tebow lobbied Ryan to let him be active for the game that quickly unraveled for the Jets.

Tebow will have until Dec. 2 to see how the injury heals as the Jets get the weekend off having played Thursday night.

“Yeah, [The ribs] are getting better, they need a little time,” Tebow said. “I think that’s up to the trainers and the coaches.
