The long speculated release of Tim Tebow by the New York Jets finally took place Monday morning, per multiple media outlets.

Tebow, who was acquired by the Jets last season from the Denver Broncos, never really found a niche with Jets, who used him sparingly in the wildcat formation and on special teams as a punt protector.

The coup de grace for Tebow's career with the Jets came late in the year when Rex  Ryan replaced a strugging Mark Sanchez with untested Greg McElroy rather than using Tebow, who had been listed as the team's No. 2 quarterback all season.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we had hoped," Jets coach Rex Ryan said via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.

Tebow's release trims the number of quarterbacks on the Jets roster to five, as they drafted West Virginia's Geno Smith in the second round on Saturday.

Tebow's future now is uncertain as he tries to find a team willing to take a chance on him with many teams now set at the quarterback position following last weekend's draft.
