Ohio State hybrid pass rusher Thaddeus Gibson is determined to prove that he'll make a smooth transition as a full-time outside linebacker in the NFL.
His goal is to be a three-down linebacker.
And the New England Patriots plan to look into possibility Thursday during a private workout, according to a source close to the Buckeyes' program.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns have scheduled a visit with Gibson for April 1.
He has previously visited the Buffalo Bills.
According to league sources, Gibson is expected to be drafted as high as the second round.
Gibson primarily played defensive end at Ohio State, but the 6-foot-2, 243-pounder played linebacker in high school.
Last season, he was named second-team All-Big Ten Conference as he led the Buckeyes with 13 tackles for losses and ranked second on the team with four sacks.
He also forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass.
"Thaddeus is a football player who's also a good athlete," Gibson's agent, Brad Cicala, told National Football Post. "His drills were impeccable at the combine and at his Pro Day. He can really play in coverage and rush the passer.
"He can do it all. I think he's a a great football player, and he's going to prove that. I've had three teams tell me they don't think he'll be there when they're on the clock."
The Pittsburgh Steelers displayed a lot of interest in Gibson at his Pro Day workout where he ran the 40-yard dash in the low 4.6 range. Steelers vice president of football operations Kevin Colbert and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau attended the workout.
Gibson is looking forward to playing linebacker in the NFL.
"It's truly the position I love the most," Gibson said during the NFL scouting combine. "I'm excited to hear the talk about me going back to linebacker, honestly, but I don't mind playing defensive end, either. I'm just excited about the opportunity and ready to go."
Gibson said that he hasn't been asked about or compared to former Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston, who's struggling in his attempt to play outside linebacker with the New York Jets since being drafted sixth overall.
In 2008, Gibson registered five sacks and nine tackles for losses.
For his career, he registered 10 sacks and 25 tackles for losses.
He decided to leave school after his junior season to help his family with medical expenses when the NFL advisory board gave him a second-round recommendation.

i hope gibson becomes successful as a full-time outside linebacker. i am very confident he can do it since he has the talent and discipline to becoming one of the greatest in NFL.

I heard Detroit station the other day talking about Gibson being takenby the Lions. Seems the Lions are talking about a "sleeper" at linebacker that they are in love with, but won't say who it is. Gibson fits the "sleeper" tag, only because on a national level, no one is talking about him before the 5th or 6th round.
I just wish Gholston would go somewhere and get a fresh start and stop all the talk of him being a bust. It's dirtying the other players!
