Ray picks music and explains why even Dan Snyder can't ruin MNF against Philly for D.C. Ray Gustini
The most surprising thing about life in D.C. today was that people were excited. It made me feel good. Businessmen fumbled with parking passes on the Metro, and cute baristas in burgundy curly-‘R’ hats filled orders at the Starbucks in Georgetown. All the bingo-calling offensive coordinators in the world couldn’t take the buzz out of this city. It’s Philadelphia. It’s Monday night. And dammit, Joe Gibbs is going to break Buddy Ryan’s hip.
These are some songs that helped get me in the mood. Watching this helped too.
“Sherry and Her Butterfly Net” by the Most Serene Republic. Most Serene Republic is a little Grizzly Bear-y for my tastes, but they absolutely nail this song. The guitar solo midway through should really get Michael Vick fired up to run his full battery of two plays tonight.
“I Want You To Keep Everything” by These United States. In college, I once had an ex-girlfriend leave a broken silver locket in my apartment after we broke up. Because I was a literature major and an idiot, I decided the best course of action would be to have the locket repaired and return it to her, assuming she would then refuse the necklace and my symbolic efforts to mend what was clearly broken. But she accepted it! What’s more, we got back together. This was supposed to be my own personal Raymond Carver story, and she ruined it by being kind and forgiving. To sum up, breakups are weird.
“Sheena is a Punk Rocker” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. For my money, there’s no such thing as a bad Ramones cover song. They just remind you of why you like rock and roll. If they remake “Pet Sematary” and don’t include this over the credits, Blanche Lincoln should convene a senate hearing.
“Fast Song” by Exlovers. Every time I write about music I like I feel like Homer Simpson in the (underrated) episode where he became a food critic. That being said, this is a groin-grabbingly good song, one that ESPN will be playing as bumper music for its college football telecasts just as soon as Doc Brown shows up with the DeLorean to take the network’s musical taste out of 1996.
“I’ll Never Let You Go” by the Teenage Prayers. The title and band name make this sound lame. IT IS NOT. Take my word for it.
“When The Stars Go Blue” by Ryan Adams. Where do you go when you’re lonely? Where do you go when you’re blue? To the channel showing the Wizards game, I guess.
