The New York Jets will release veteran running back Thomas Jones on March 5, the first day of free agency.
The team sent out a press release Monday afternoon alerting the media of the move.
“We have informed Thomas Jones and his representatives that we will release him on March 5,” said Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. “Thomas joined us three years ago and has been a productive, passionate leader both on and off the field who has served as a positive influence for our younger players. We were fortunate to acquire Thomas and wish him the best.”
Jones recently refused the option of restructuring his contract which had a $3 million roster bonus due on March 9 and a base salary of $2.8 million in 2010.
The ten-year veteran out of Virginia rushed for 1,402 yards (third in NFL) and 14 touchdowns in 2009. Prior to joining the Jets in 2007, Jones played for the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona Cardinals.
