Toby Gerhart has waited patiently behind Adrian Peterson since entering the NFL.

Now its his time to assume the role as an NFL starting running back. Speaking to the Florida Times-Union, Gerhart said he's ready to be a team's go-to ball-carrier.

“I think I’m in a unique situation," Gerhart said. "Even though it’s my fifth year in the league, I can come in and be a dominant guy. I’m ready for my shot now.”

Gerhart is replacing Maurice Jones-Drew, who left for Oakland in free agency.

In backup duty over the past four seasons, Gerhart has carried the ball 276 times for 1,305 yards and five touchdowns. There isn't much tread on the tires as Jacksonville is getting a fresh back that's also a veteran.

Gerhart averaged 7.9 yards per carry a season ago, though he toted the ball a season-low 36 times. Over his career, he averages 4.7 yards per carry.
