Raiders coach discusses cutting JaMarcus Russell Aaron Wilson
Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable has weighed in on the release of quarterback bust JaMarcus Russell.
Predictably, it wasn't a topic he wanted to spend much time discussing on during a KNBR radio interview.
"We did what's best for our football team," Cable said. "That's all that really matters here. Why or why not or this or that doesn't really matter anymore. What matters is that we move forward as a football team and that we do what we need to do to succeed.
"I think this: I think that we have spent a lot of time in the last year and a half trying to turn this thing into a competitive team and we've done that. I think that guys in that locker room expect from myself and this organization -- no B.S. "Let's go out and work hard and become champions and get ourselves into the playoffs. That's our goal now. That's it."
Cable said the team has definitely moved on from the Russell era.
The Raiders traded for quarterback Jason Campbell and installed him as their new starter.
"They've accepted it fine," Cable said. "We really haven't put a lot into it or talked a lot about it. It's not necessary.
"Really, we've talked about JaMarcus. Let's talk about something else. He's not here anymore. You can only beat a dead dog so many times. So let's move forward. We've got a good young team."
As for Russell, he's reportedly not interested in the UFL or CFL and there hasn't been anything concrete as far as him going to another NFL team at this point.
