Victor Cruz can’t think about the contract that is paying him $540,000 this season or the New York Giants wide receiver will not be in a good position.
Bob Glauber of Newsday writes that it is time for the Giants to rip up the rookie contract Cruz is playing under and pay the man. He’s coming off a sensational season a year ago and has proved his value again through the early portion of this season, winning Sunday’s game over the Washington Redskins with a 77-yard touchdown in the closing minutes.
“I just kind of want to block it out," Cruz told Glauber. "I feel like if I start thinking about it, it will start consuming me, and I don't want it to get that way. I just want to block it out and focus on football, and I think I've been doing a good job of that."
Cruz has 50 receptions for 627 yards and seven touchdowns to this point. He’s on pace to improve upon the big numbers he posted a year ago when he burst onto the scene with 82 catches for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Giants have intimated something could happen for Cruz this season but Glauber reports nothing is imminent.
“All I can do is play football," Cruz said. "I'm not in control of any of that stuff."
He’ll get paid. It’s just a matter of when at this point.
