Every morning Leslie Frazier gets out of bed as the coach of the Minnesota Vikings, he has no idea who his quarterback will be this coming season.

He’s not alone in that regard. Ron Rivera is in the same boat as a fellow first-year coach with the Carolina Panthers. But in an uncertain time for the NFL, Frazier is uncertain what direction his team will go in when the labor impasse is resolved. All we know right now is it will not be a certain gunslinger who hails from Kiln, Miss.

“It's kind of a matter of who's available," Frazier said, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "And we need to find a guy who we can build around. That would be the ideal situation.

"But if Joe Webb can be that guy, it'll be Joe Webb. We like Joe; we like some of the things he did at the end of last season. We're going to give him a chance to compete for that starting job as well. It's open. We hope to have a young guy, and maybe a veteran guy. But it's going to be open competition."

We seriously doubt Webb will get far in his competition. Sure, he led the Vikings in a late-season upset of the Philadelphia Eagles, but Webb remains a raw project in need of time. Does Frazier want to hitch his wagon to something to insecure? Remember, Webb spent most of his time last season learning to play wide receiver. The Vikings have been doing homework on every quarterback for this draft and surely they’ve done thorough work on the free-agent possibilities. Webb will have a chance to compete as a backup.
