Vols' Berry should be the new target in Cleveland

The trade today between the Browns and the Eagles that sent CB Sheldon Brown—along with OLB Chris Gocong—to Cleveland should open up the possibility of Mike Holmgren targeting Tennessee FS Eric Berry on opening night of the draft.

Brown should be the No.1 CB in Cleveland for 2010. A proven veteran that allows the club to pass on Florida CB Joe Haden—a player they have been linked to in the latest pre-draft buzz. This isn’t a knock on Haden, who is the top CB prospect coming out, but we will begin to see the top ten take shape out of positional need.

I wrote about Berry last week, and he does have top ten talent. Enough to go as high as No.4 to Washington or No.5 to Kansas City. But, if he is hanging around by the phone at No.7, it is the right move for Holmgren to grab him. No question, in my opinion.

Berry does have that unique skill set to make plays at the NFL level, and when paired with the addition of Brown, we could start to see a solid secondary take shape in Cleveland. He is the top overall defensive back in the draft, and a player you need to run a pressure style defense.

We all know it is still very early in the draft process, but the opportunity could be there. Haden, on the other hand, could fall all the way to the Niners at No. 13 to work opposite CB Nate Clements—which would be a steal for San Fran outside of the top ten.

But, for today, the talk is all about Cleveland. A team that could go from having an average secondary to one that will make plays in 2010 in the matter of weeks.
