Wade Phillips recommends Manziel to Texans for top overall pick

Former Texans interim coach recommends Heisman Trophy winner Aaron Wilson

Former Houston Texans interim coach and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips recommended the team draft Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel during his interview for the head-coaching job that went to Bill O'Brien.

"When I did the interview with the McNairs, I told them they ought to take Johnny Football," Phillips said on 610 Radio. "That's what I told them, and I'm sitting here now without a job."

Despite the Texans not hiring Phillips, they might take his recommendation under consideration.

Other candidates include Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles, Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and South Carolina defensive end Jadaveon Clowney.

"I thought it would be the Earl Campbell of Houston, the reincarnation," Phillips said.. "The Heisman Trophy winner comes to Houston, from the state of Texas. I thought it would be a neat deal."
