Throwing interceptions in preseason games will usually slide you down the depth chart, and throwing three picks in the game’s first three possessions — like Denver’s Kyle Orton did Friday night against San Francisco — could cause an unplanned quarterback battle to take place.

Sure, head coach Josh McDaniels will be quick to shut that talk down, as he did after the game last night. But let’s be honest here — this is the same head coach who brought his high-scoring system from New England to Denver, and this performance from Orton has to sting his ego. For now, backup Chris Simms will remain on the second team, but another shaky outing by Orton this August may force McDaniels to give Simms a look with the first unit.

Donovan McNabbAPDonovan McNabb

I still see the Eagles as Donovan McNabb’s football team, and despite the quarterback controversy that might be played up weekly in the media, little chance exists that new quarterback, Michael Vick, will take McNabb’s spot in 2009. Sure, he could eventually maneuver his way to become McNabb’s primary backup, but don’t expect there to be any discussion about Vick, who has only a 53.8 career completion percentage, taking over the Eagles’ starting job.

McNabb without question gives the Eagles a better chance to win than Vick — even after the former Falcon is back in playing shape.

The to injury to Terrell Owens won’t hurt the Bills tonight as they host Chicago at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, but if I were a defensive coach for the Bears, I’d be disappointed the six-time Pro Bowler wasn’t out of the field.

Part of the evaluation process over the course of the preseason is watching your own players go up against solid competition in game situations. The Bears are already minus starting cornerback Charles Tillman, and this would have been a great opportunity to see how the rest of the secondary would have responded playing against T.O. and the Bills’ no-huddle offense. Most of the talk coming out of Chicago has been about the pass rush and the defensive line’s ability to get to the quarterback, but keep an eye on this secondary, where plenty of unanswered questions still remain.

Anyone else notice that the Raiders put up close to 500 yards of total offense Thursday night against the Cowboys? The ‘Boys and Wade Phillips need to use this film as a teaching tool, because although the Raiders have some talent on offense, it is nothing compared to what Dallas will see in the NFC East. Big night for Oakland and a black eye for Phillips and his defense to start the preseason.

Sage Rosenfels had a solid outing last night against the Colts in his Vikings debut, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as far as Minnesota is concerned.

Sage RosenfelsAPSage Rosenfels

We all know that the Vikings quarterback play has been shaky at best in training camp, and for Rosenfels — a new quarterback trying to win over his coaching staff, his teammates, and the fans of Minnesota — to come out and lead his club on two scoring drives was essential to this football team. Instead of waking up this morning thinking that his offense is still searching for a definitive answer behind center, Vikings coach Brad Childress had to finally feel he had some stability at the quarterback position.

Coaches want to see their offense come out in their first dress rehearsal and put together a scoring drive, show some consistency in both the passing and the running game, and put into action the basic formations they have been working on since spring mini-camps. Good start for Rosenfels.

Tonight will be a good test for the Packers’ new defense under the lights at Lambeau Field against the Browns, because they will see the best from both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, who are in a major QB battle in camp. And that’s a good thing for Dom Capers and his staff.

Just as I said above about the absence of T.O. tonight against the Bears, Capers wants his defense to be tested throughout the month of August, and playing against Cleveland is a good start — because both quarterbacks will see a good amount of minutes. Don’t expect Capers to open up his pressure package tonight in the first preseason game, but it should be interesting to see how this defense responds playing against two quarterbacks with starting experience.

Round two starts for Vince Young tonight at home against Tampa. He didn’t show us much last week, and tonight offers him another opportunity to prove to the coaching staff that he deserves playing time at some point this season. With that said, Young is only another mediocre outing away from all the talk about Patrick Ramsey supplanting him as the backup becoming real. Talk about pressure in August.

The Packer "D" has looked pretty decent, not spectacular but decent. There are 7:32 in the 3rd quarter and the Packers lead 14-0. I know that McCarthy mentioned he didn't want to punt tonight but sending Crosby out for FG attempts of 60 (hit the upright) and 55 was kind of pointless.

The first team Packer offense was pretty sharp and Matt Flynn looked OK too.

Desmond Bishop, the Packer LB has played really well

GB had over 200 tds. rushing. RB Gregg(?) Lumpkin looked really good. Pretty good quickness and nice vision. Moved the pile well too. Jackson & Wynn might have to look over their shoulders. Lumpkin had 1 rush for 19yds last yr. He was mentioned here this week. I thought he looked pretty good in pre-season last year.

Cleveland was "flat" tonite aside from a couple of sacks and tipped ball INT's. The network is showing the game a 2nd time right now. Only in GB.

For me, the big surprise was Sutton at running back. I don't even know his first name! During training camp, I've only heard about how good Wynn looks, and about Jackson and Grant. Sutton showed some quickness and some power up the middle. With another outing like that, Sutton could push Lumpkin off the team.

Finley looks pretty smooth running routes and with the ball, especially compared with Bubba Franks' stiffness. Donald Lee had a good catch and run; he won't be pushed aside easily.

Flynn looked good as a backup. Brohm still looks lost and very slow in the pocket. If Rodgers goes down for a few games, I could see the Packers looking to replace Brohm as the backup to Flynn.

But defense was the highlight of the night. Seeing five or six pass rushers on nearly every play was heartwarming. At least three of the Cleveland interceptions came as a result of pressure forcing hurried throws or tipped balls. Bishop was a beast and could prove to be the best inside blitzer. Barnett has a habit of trying to evade blockers as he blitzes; Bishop runs through them.

On Cleveland's side, their "stars" certainly are cause for concern. Both Quinn and Anderson tossed horrible picks, throwing the ball into bad situations. Edwards dropped a touchdown in the back of the endzone. That team will be a mess again this season.

TGIFS. Thank God it's Football Season!

Mack, I think McCarthy had a definite plan for trying the long field goals rather than working the two punters. During this preseason, Crosby has missed 10 kicks during camp drills, 9 of the kicks missing to the right. They have modified Crosby's approach to eliminate the pushes to the right, so they likely want to get Crosby as much work as possible. Also, Crosby missed two 50-plus yarders last season that would have won ball games. MM may want to get Crosby as many long range shots as he can this preseason to work on these longer kicks in live action. Crosby definitely has the leg strength; MM may want to get him reps.

No team ever lined up for a game winning punt. I'd rather give the work to Crosby in meaningless preseason games.

Jerry Finley looks good. Really good. I've been at 8 practices and the kid has got something special about him. The change from Year 1 to Year 2 has been like night and day. I see him being the No.1 TE by Week 4 and a a lot of years to come. He's special.

He's the TE we haven't had since Keith Jackson.

Pete:

I heard McCarthy after the game. he said that Crosby was hiiting long kicks before the game.
I guess by this time that long field goals are not really Crosby's forte. He is pretty spotty at them.
Whatever McCarthy was trying to do was lost. One kick to the left hitting the upright and the 55yarder went right. What worries me is that they are going to bring in some other guy and cut Crosby. Like when they cut Ryan the punter last year. That worked out real well. At least Crosby pushes kickoffs into the endzone.

I see where Ryan got off a 70+yd. punt for Seahawks last night.

Sounds like the Pack got off to a good start. My Vikes D looked very strong. Not overly impressed with Sage yet. Nice stats but not many tough throws. Lots of checkdowns/short throws. We will see. Very hard to trust anything you see preseason. NFC North should be very interesting. It does seem like the new players on the oline will be ok. Sullivan looked good and I think Loadholt will be a big upgrade over Cook last yr. How is GB's Oline shaping up?
